How to Seek and Offer Forgiveness on Shab-e-Barat

Shab e Baraat, observed on the 15th night of the Islamic month of Shaban, holds a significant value in Islam. It is a night of hope, mercy, and an opportunity for Muslims to seek forgiveness and guidance from Allah Almighty for the year ahead. Holy Quran does not mention Shab e Baraat, the essence of this night is deeply rooted in Islamic traditions, hadees, and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). This blog aims to unfold the spiritual values of Shab e Baraat through Quranic verses, narrations, and practices.

Understanding Shab e Baraat:

Shab e Baraat translates to the “Night of Mercy” or the “Night of Forgiveness”. It is believed that on this night, Allah Almighty extends His mercy and forgiveness to mankind, deciding their fate and life events for the coming year. This night is a divine gift, offering a chance for believers to repent and prepare for the future with a pure heart and renewed faith.

Prophetic Traditions and Narrations:

The significance of Shab e Baraat can be seen through the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). It is narrated that, the Prophet (S.A.W) is reported to have said, “Allah looks at His creation during the night of the 15th of Shaban and forgives all His creation except for a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) and a mushahin (one who has malice in his heart).” 

– Sunan Ibn Majah

Another narration points out how Allah forgives everyone on this night, except for those who keep doing major sins without repentance. These stories show how kind and loving Allah is, and to ask for forgiveness, fix their relationships, and make their hearts clean.

Practices on Shab e Baraat:

On this blessed night, Muslims engage in various acts of worship, focusing on achieving the opportunity of mercy and forgiveness. Practices include:

Nawafil Prayers: Muslims perform their daily prayer and they perform additional nawafil prayers throughout the night to get closer to the Allah Almighty and seek forgiveness.

Quran Recitation: Muslims make themselves engaged with the remembrance of Allah Almighty and do recitation of the Holy Quran, understanding its meanings and guidance. Most of them also read “Surah Yaseen” as it is the heart of the Holy Quran.

Dua & Tasbeeh:  Muslims do different tasbeehat to get awarded with goodness and piety. Also, do a lot of Dua to seek forgiveness for past sins, and make intentions for righteous deeds.

Fasting: Muslims also observe fasting on the day of Shab e Baraat as an act of devotion and seeking nearness to Allah.

Reflecting and Reconnecting:

Shab e Baraat is not only about individual correction but also about community and relationships. It is a time to forgive and seek forgiveness from others. Also to show the kindness and togetherness that Islam teaches about. Muslims are encouraged to clear their hearts of malice, envy, and hatred, focusing on unity and love within the community.

When is Shab e Baraat?

In Pakistan, Shab e Barat 2024 is likely to happen on the evening of 25th February. This special night is observed every year during the middle of the Islamic month of Shaban. People in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and nearby places celebrate it together. But in Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Egypt, Shab e Barat falls on different days.
